What Does Car Key Replacement Involve?
Modern car keys are more than a piece of metal — they contain a transponder chip that communicates with your vehicle's immobiliser. Without that chip being programmed to your specific car, the engine simply won't start, even if the key is physically cut correctly.
Car key replacement is therefore a two-stage process: cutting the key blade to match your lock profile, then programming the transponder to your car's ECU. We do both on-site using professional automotive diagnostic equipment — the same tools used by franchised dealers, but at roadside or on your driveway.
If you have no original key at all, we can usually still help. We use your vehicle's VIN number and lock data to create a replacement from scratch. You'll need to prove ownership (V5C, insurance document, or similar), and we may need to check a couple of extra things depending on your vehicle — but for the majority of makes we can do a full zero-key replacement in a single visit.
Types of Car Key We Replace
Transponder Keys
The most common type for post-2000 vehicles. A chip inside the key handle communicates with the immobiliser. We cut and programme these for most makes.
Remote / Key Fob Combos
Keys with integrated central locking remotes. We replace the blade, programme the immobiliser chip, and sync the remote function.
Smart / Proximity Keys
Keyless entry and push-button start. These require specialist programming. We cover most common models including Ford Fiesta, VW Golf, BMW, and Nissan Qashqai.
Flip Keys
Keys with a folding blade mechanism. We replace broken housings, cut new blades, and re-programme transponders.
Basic Cut Keys
For older vehicles without immobilisers — we cut and profile these quickly, usually in minutes.
VAT Keys & High Security
High-security keys for Land Rover, Jaguar, and high-end BMWs. These require additional authorisation steps — call us to discuss.

Car Key Replacement — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between key cutting and key programming?
Key cutting shapes the physical blade so it turns the lock mechanically. Key programming writes a unique code from the transponder chip into your car's ECU so the immobiliser recognises it. Both are required on any post-2000 vehicle — a cut-only key will turn but won't start the engine.
Can you replace my car key if I have no original at all?
Yes. For most vehicles we can create a replacement from scratch using the VIN and lock data. You'll need to prove ownership — a V5C logbook, valid insurance certificate, or finance agreement. Once verified, we cut and programme a fully working key in a single visit.
How long does car key replacement take at my location?
Once we arrive, most standard replacements take 30–60 minutes — cutting the blade, programming the transponder, and testing locks, ignition, and remote functions. All-keys-lost jobs on high-security vehicles occasionally take slightly longer due to additional security steps.
Can I get a spare key made at the same visit?
Yes — and we recommend it. Getting a second key cut while we're already there adds very little to the total cost compared to calling us back separately. Tell us when you phone and we'll bring the right blank for a second key.
Will a key from you be any different to one from the dealer?
No. We use OEM or equivalent-quality key blanks and the same calibre of programming equipment as main dealers. The key is indistinguishable in function. The difference is we come to you, cost significantly less, and are available 24/7 — dealers typically need several days and charge £250–£400+.
My car has push-button start and keyless entry — can you replace that key?
Yes. Smart and proximity keys require specialist programming equipment, which we carry for Ford, VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, and most other mainstream brands. Call with your specific model and year for confirmation before booking.
How do you cut a key if there is no original to copy from?
We use your vehicle's lock profile data, accessed via the OBD diagnostic port and automotive database, to determine the correct key cut code. This allows us to cut a new blade to exact specification without needing the original to copy from. This is standard professional locksmith practice.
What if the new key turns but the engine still won't start?
This usually means the transponder chip hasn't programmed correctly — sometimes caused by a low vehicle battery or an ECU issue. We troubleshoot this on-site. If the programming fails due to a vehicle fault (not a key issue), we'll explain exactly what's needed and won't charge for a key that doesn't work.
