Ford uses its Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) across all models from the late 1990s onwards. Newer Fords — Puma, Kuga, and Transit Custom from 2018 onward — use the Passive Entry Passive Start (PEPS) proximity system, which requires specialist EEPROM-level programming. My Ford Fiesta key fob has stopped working — what does that mean?
If the key fob buttons stop working but the blade still starts the car, it's usually a dead fob battery (CR2032, easy to replace) or a failed fob circuit. If neither the fob nor the blade works, the transponder chip may have de-programmed — we can re-synchronise it on-site. If the blade works but the engine won't start, the transponder chip needs re-programming to the ECU.
Can you make a spare Ford key while I still have my original?
Yes — and we recommend it. Getting a spare Ford key made while you have the original costs £80–£140 depending on the key type. If you lose the original later and need a full all-keys-lost replacement, the cost rises to £150–£240. Spares can usually be made the same day in Leeds.
